FIRST BEAUFORT CUP PROVES HUGE SUCCESS

Leigh Burley in action on the snow

Rugby thrives on traditions, with some fixtures between clubs in Britain going back over one hundred and fifty years. On Saturday at Cumberland Village Park the Comox Valley Kickers and the Port Alberni Black Sheep began another tradition when the two clubs played for the newly inaugurated Beaufort Cup. The two clubs hope to play annually for this new Cup in a fixture that will include every level within their organizations and will be played on a total points basis on the day. In the first Annual Beaufort Cup only the Senior Men and the Senior Women played, but in future organizers hope to include Junior as well as Mini players.
Kickers “Mr. Everything”, Colin Chappell came up with the idea of the Beaufort Cup: “Just as the Beaufort Mountain range separates us, the Beaufort Cup will bring us closer together by holding this inter-club, “friendly” event to include every level of the two clubs,” said the former Bath player. “We have been trying to make this work for a number of years and have always fallen afoul of the weather, but today, in spite of a light dusting of snow, we finally held the first fixture. And, it proved a great success.”
The Black Sheep arrived with over forty players in their own club bus and soon the women’s team took on the Kicker women in a Seven-a side match. The Black Sheep eventually won five tries to three, 25-15 leaving the Kicker men with a ten point deficit to make up if they hoped to be the first holders of the Cup.
The men then took to the blue chalk-lined pitch – a sight seldom seen in rugby – on a venue that looked more amenable to having a snowball fight than a rugby match. The Black Sheep seemed to recover from their Christmas excesses far faster than the Kickers did, and soon held a 14-0 lead on tries by Lewis Mearns and Cody McLarey, both converted by Todd Daradics, before the Kickers got on the board shortly before half-time when Konrad Nikkel opened the door for Nathan Holley with a pretty little offload allowing the big #8 to romp over for a score under the post to make it easy for Eli Cummins to convert: 14-7 half-time.
The Black Sheep continued to pressure the home side in the second stanza crossing for three further tries by Joe Kaulagin, Ty Shannon and Ryan Turner with Todd Daradics converting two for a 33-7 win, giving the visitors an overall Beaufort Cup tally of 58-22.
After the matches all the players and supporters repaired to the Kickers Clubhouse at their Fallen Alder facility where the Kickers cook Steve Russell had prepared two turkeys, a huge roast of beef and a variety of salads for the hungry masses to demolish. “This has been a wonderful day and a great event to kick off the New Year,” commented Port Alberni’s Jan Purwal, the Black Sheep’s “Mr. Everything”. “ Last year twenty-eight of our club toured New Zealand during the World Cup and so this is a wonderful way to kick-off this year with a friendly event that will forge new bonds between our two clubs and continue to foster rugby in the North Island .”
“We obviously ate and partied more than the Black Sheep over the holidays,” said Kicker’s coach Aaron L’arrive. “They played very well today and we had trouble getting enough ball to work with. On the good side we were able to introduce three new players, a flanker, a prop and a scrum-half who have come down from Campbell River and want to play for the club. All good. This was a good warm-up for our first League fixture against Cowichan Piggies two weekends from now.”
So, the first Beaufort Cup will be recorded as a win for the men and women from the West Coast but, no doubt, as this new fixture continues on an annual basis, the real winner will be the “Great Game” of rugby as new traditions take hold across the Beaufort Mountains.

CUP FINAL RUBGY AT ITS BEST

Brad Hannah attacks through a tough Velox defense

A bright sunny winter Sunday at Cumberland’s Village Park provided the perfect setting for a titanic clash between the 10-0 Comox Valley Kickers and the 9-2 Velox-Valhallians as they took the field to play the final of the Fall Vancouver Island Div. 3 final. The biggest crowd of the year; intense committed rugby by both sides; referees and touch-judges brought in especially from Victoria with miked headsets – the first ever seen in the Comox Valley, all helped create an atmosphere of cup final rugby. And, as befitting such a momentous occasion, the appreciative crowd enjoyed a hard-fought, well-contested match that saw the visitors from Victoria win 24-15 and retain the impressive looking trophy they had won last season.

The home team played a fine, spirited game of rugby spinning the ball wide to their backs at every occasion but, as the game wore on the more experienced visiting team, boasting seven players over the age of thirty seven, one of whom, forty-eight year old Canadian international prop Kevin Wirachowski earned seventeen caps playing for his country from 1992-2003, proved decisive. It was this experience that saw the Valhallians eventually gain the ascendency in the second-half to secure the victory after the sides had played to a 10-10 half time draw.

“It was a fantastic game of rugby between two teams that like to play open, running rugby,” commented Velox captain Todd Cunningham after the game. “In the end however, it ended being a defensive struggle with our experience being the decisive factor. Full marks to the Kickers, they gave as good as they got and it was a battle right to the final whistle.”

The Kickers scored five minutes into the game when centre Eli Cummins, who was the pick of the home team backs, scored under the posts, after fullback Ross McLean opened the door with a scintillating run that saw him carve up the Velox backfield. Cummins converted his own try. 7-0. The visitors replied at twelve minutes when hooker John Lyle forced his way over after a period of domination by the Velox forwards close to the Kickers line. No conversion: 7-5. The visitors increased their lead at twenty-seven minutes when centre Dale Grinston touched down wide out after his forwards had created a solid platform from which to launch an attack through the back-line. 10-7. Minutes later Eli Cummins kicked a penalty for the Kickers when the visitors infringed offside in front of the Kickers’ goal posts offering Cummins the easiest of opportunities. 10-10, half-time.

It took Velox only two minutes into the second-half to take the lead. Fly-half and captain Todd Cunningham made the simplest of fakes to open the Kickers’ defense which allowed him to score near the posts giving Kevin Summerfeld the softest of conversions. 17-10. To their credit the Kickers replied almost immediately when the team’s top try-scorer Steve Hextall scored his thirteenth of the season touching down after a long spell of continuous attack by his teammates. 17-15.

Velox came right back and, had it not been for a number of stalwart defensive goal-line stands, the score could have been dramatically higher. In the end, however, centre Conrad Newall did make a nice break to score at fifty-five minutes, which Summerfeld converted, bringing the score to 24-15. In the final fifteen minutes the Kickers camped inside the Velox twenty-two but could not find a way to crack the solid defensive wall put up by the eventual winners. 24-15 final.

“We battled hard all the way, even though we didn’t win a scrum or line-out the whole second-half,” said Kicker’s co-coach Frank Balcombe after the game. “I think part of our downfall may have been the fact that in the games leading up to today’s final we didn’t have the opportunity to play the type of opponent we faced today. Perhaps our other wins came a bit too easily and today we faced a team full of experience who were more used to playing this kind of Grand Final rugby.”

Scrum-half Mike McGee and centre Eli Cummins played well in a losing cause in the Kickers backs with back-rowers Jeremy Grootendorst and Brad Hannah looking prominent in the forwards. “There is no doubt we have the bodies and the heart,” continued Balcombe. “ But we need to know when to do the right things at the right time. These are all things that we will be working on as we prepare for the Spring season and we look forward to making it back to the final and achieving a more favourable result.”

The Kickers will enjoy a Christmas break and will return to action in the New Year.

Comox Valley Women Wrap Up In Great Style

On Saturday December 3rd Comox Valley Kickers Women travelled to Port Alberni to play in a round robin with Nanaimo and Port Alberni to complete the fall season. Low numbers prompted the coaches to divide all the girls into Comox Valley “Pink” and Port Alberni “Black” sides. The first half evolved into a defensive standoff with neither team being able to score. However with resumption of play, a quick pick close to the try line put Pink up 5-0. Within a few minutes Black replied after quick ball off the breakdown. The convert made the score 7-5 After a lot of back and forth, Black capitalized on a gap in the Pink defense running the ball over in what turned out to be the final phase of the game. Final score: Blacks 12 Pinks 5.

When asked about her impressions of the day, Comox Valley captain, Aimee Burley stated, “Today is what rugby is about. It didn’t matter who your teammates were for the day, they were just out to have fun, win or lose! Port Alberni’s hosting was top-notch and all three teams meshed well on the pitch, everyone was smiling and having a great time. When the final whistle blew the girls the weren’t quite ready to call it a day.”

Comox woman now enter the winter break with training sessions once a week. Keep checking www.kickersrugby.ca for details!

KICKERS WACK HORNETS!

This past Sunday was truly a rugby day at Village Park, Cumberland as the Kickers took advantage of the superb conditions and appreciative crowd to beat Nanaimo Hornets 35 – 8.

Steve Hextall and Troy Mader exploited their opportunities each scoring twice thereby putting the Kickers out in front 20 – 3 at the half. Play transformed into a defensive tussle for the rest of the game providing occasion for forwards Shane Stuchbery, Jeromy Grootendorst and Andy Eaton to each notch a try. Jamie Kerr replied for Nanaimo. None of the conversion attempts were successful.

KICKERS COME AWAY WITH 3 BAGS FULL!

Under sunny skies in Port Alberni, inspired set play produced consistent and timely possession that allowed the Kickers to down an initially spirited and stubborn Black Sheep side 54 – 12. Ross McLean scored 2 trys while singles were added by Pieter Voster, Jake Nessman and Troy Mader. Kickers Man of the Match, Eli Cummins, chipped in with a try and six conversions. A penalty try was awarded to Comox Valley.

Have a look at the slideshow below to see some of the action. Many thanks to Michelle Hamilton for her regular support and attendance at away games, not to mention the  images and videos (the latter is mostly available on our team’s group on Facebook).

This last game of the fall fixtures was highlited by strong Kicker tackling, good support and unrelenting pressure. A great player turnout was icing on the cake for the 9 – 0 Kickers.  (Report by Harry Gaines.)

The Kickers are currently leading the Island Div 3 by a comfortable margin.

VIRU play-offs begin this coming Sunday, December 4 @ 1:00 PM, Village Park, Cumberland.

Special mention goes out to Chris Ostertag and Aisha Mendez who recently got married (as well as a belated congratulations on the birth of their son).
